We've tested 75 duvets and these are the best for every budget

It’s tiring work testing all those duvets, but these are the picks we’re still dreaming about

Good Housekeeping

Your duvet can have a huge impact on your quality of sleep. You want one that’s cosy, but not too hot; one that’s light so you don't feel claustrophobic, but heavy enough to feel snug; and one that's easy to clean and durable, so you don't have to replace it too soon...And that’s all before you get into the best materials and fibres.

A lot of this does come down to your own personal sleep preferences, but with so many on the market, the Good Housekeeping Institute is here to lend a helping hand. We’ve tested 75 duvets over the years, so we’re pretty sure one of our picks will suit you.

The best duvets for 2025

Say goodbye to counting sheep and check out our best duvets in one handy list:

Our experts recruited a panel of testers to help them find the best duvets for all preferences and budgets, asking them to curl up with them for a few weeks before giving detailed feedback on comfort, breathability, washing and more.

Our in-house team also assessed each duvet and conducted wash tests to check for shrinkage and changes in quality. You can find more detail on how we test below our reviews, but these are the ones that came out on top.

All sizes shown are for a UK double, unless specified.

Simba Summer Hybrid® Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Summer Hybrid® Duvet

Score: 98/100

A 4.5 tog duvet may seem too light to keep you warm on chillier nights, but Simba’s clever Stratos “cool touch” fabric works to regulate temperature and kept our testers snug without causing any sweating during our tests.

It scored highly in other areas, too – the fabric is soft, durable and well-made, while the recycled plastic bottle filling is evenly distributed without clumping. As a result, everyone slept soundly.

In fact, this duvet was difficult to fault – it was easy to clean, store and fit into a double duvet cover, so you won’t be wrestling with it on laundry day, either.

Best all-seasons duvet

Soak & Sleep Soft As Down Microfibre Duvet (4.5 + 9 tog)

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Soft As Down Microfibre Duvet (4.5 + 9 tog)

Score: 97/100

This all-seasons duvet was a “game-changer” for testers. They loved the choice between layers (either 4.5 or 9 tog) and the option to join them together to create a thicker 13.5 tog duvet for the coldest nights – even if connecting them via the ‘cufflink’ design was a little fiddly.

Making the bed with both layers combined was also a challenge due to its cosy thickness. But this didn’t put our testers off – all agreed they would recommend this duvet to friends and family, with its luxuriously soft feel and high-quality touches, such as the grey trim detailing, helping to seal the deal.

We also tested the Soak and Sleep Soft As Down Microfibre Duvet with a 10.5 tog rating, which scored 96/100. Read our review in our roundup of the best winter duvets.

Best down duvet

The White Company Hungarian Goose Down Duvet 10.5 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hungarian Goose Down Duvet 10.5 Tog

Score: 96/100

Our winning down duvet wowed the experts with its luxurious quality. A combination of goose down and feathers makes it super soft, lightweight and comfortable to sleep under – and our testers weren’t prickled by feathers poking through, either. Some found it slightly bumpier than synthetic duvets, but that’s to be expected with down.

Note that The White Company says its filling is sourced from cruelty-free suppliers and it only uses food industry by-products. Impressively for down, it washed well and was easy to pop inside a duvet cover. But we’ll leave you with the words of one of our testers, who said: “This is amazing, like a hug in a duvet!”

Slumberdown Chilly Nights Double Duvet 15 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Chilly Nights Double Duvet 15 Tog

Score: 94/100

Despite the high 15 tog rating, testers didn’t find this duvet too thick; instead, they said it was comfortable and snug to sleep under. They also liked the ‘puffy’ appearance, which made their beds even more inviting than normal.

It may not be as luxurious and dense as a down duvet, but every tester said they’d recommend it to friends and family after the four-week trial. It washed well (though it took a while to dry) and maintained its high-quality stitching and comfort.

Emma 4-Seasons Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
4-Seasons Duvet

Score: 94/100

Small, secure poppers turn this into a versatile, year-round duvet. When its 3.5 tog and 7 tog layers are combined, the full 10.5 togs are perfect for the chillier nights, while the separate layers will see you through the rest of the year.

We’d have liked a storage bag for the extra parts but otherwise, the three-in-one design was a big hit. The layers stayed together securely when combined and were quiet too. Our experts noticed some shrinkage during the wash tests but otherwise, it maintained it’s even filling and high-quality stitching.

Simba Hybrid® 3-in-1 Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hybrid® 3-in-1 Duvet

Score: 93/100

Just like the Emma option above, this is another 10.5 tog duvet that's made up of two lighter layers. Again, this Simba duvet is filled with soft polyester, which is made from recycled plastic bottles and boasts the brand's temperature control technology, designed to help you sleep well all year round.

Some testers found the fully combined duvet too hot, so they appreciated the versatility of the separate layers on warmer nights. It shrunk slightly in the wash and rustled a bit when testers tossed and turned in their sleep, but everyone still said they’d recommend it to a friend.

Best lightweight duvet

Larke Nature's Blend Duvet 4.5 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Nature's Blend Duvet 4.5 Tog

Score: 92/100

Filled with 100% natural eucalyptus fibres, this duvet from up-and-coming sleep brand Larke is a great option if you want to avoid synthetic materials and down isn’t for you. Eucalyptus is known for its breathable and moisture-wicking properties, plus it’s naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria growth.

Our panellists tried the 4.5 tog option, and they were seriously impressed. They appreciated how lightweight it was – even in larger sizes like super king – making it easy to handle when changing the sheets.

It proved especially popular with the hot sleepers on our panel, who said it did an excellent job of regulating their temperature overnight. Some would have liked a weightier option to make them feel cocooned, but that comes down to personal preference. You can also opt for the 10.5 or 13.5 tog versions if cosiness is key. We haven't tested it in these togs but they come with the same breathable and moisture-wicking properties.

Best bamboo duvet

Panda Cloud Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Cloud Duvet

Score: 92/100

Described as offering “five-star hotel quality” by one panellist, this more eco-friendly, two-part duvet cover is a delight to sleep under, with a high-thread-count finish that feels cool-to-the-touch and silky-soft against the skin. The duvet was easy to unpack, fitted snugly inside our cover, and washed and dried well, although it did shrink very slightly after cleaning.

The snap button system allows you to attach the 4.5 tog duvet and 10.5 tog duvet together (you’ll need to purchase both separately) for extra warmth in the winter, making this a versatile year-round design. It’s worth noting that the popper connection can be a bit fiddly to fasten and, as expected, it’s heavier when using both layers, but this was by no means a deal-breaker. In fact, 100% of panellists said they’d purchase the duvet again and recommend it to others.

Joint best wool duvet

Slumberdown Wonderful Wool Double Duvet - Heavyweight King

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Wonderful Wool Double Duvet - Heavyweight King

Score: 91/100

Made from 100% British wool, this Slumberdown duvet is a heavyweight option that naturally regulates body temperature to provide warmth and cosiness. Testers found it a joy to sleep under and appreciated the nice natural smell of the wool, alongside the crisp, quality cotton cover.

Performance-wise, it was a real all-rounder. However, it's a bit trickier to care for than others on our list. Wool is naturally anti-bacterial, but this duvet’s not machine washable. Removing coffee stains with a wet sponge required plenty of scrubbing, and drying took a while, too. But if you're careful with your morning brew, it’s a fantastic buy.

Rise & Fall The Luxury British Wool Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
The Luxury British Wool Duvet

Score: 91/100

Another wool duvet that wowed our testers, this premium buy from Rise and Fall is made with traceable British wool. Our panel found it luxuriously soft to the touch thanks to its high-quality finish and even filling. All of which helped them enjoy a dreamy night’s sleep.

It regulated their temperature well, but some found it noisy when they snuggled under the covers, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re a light sleeper. It’s not machine washable either, but that’s easily solved with a trip to the dry cleaners.

Hungarian Goose Down Double Duvet 10.5 Tog

Score: 91/100

Our testers appreciated the sustainable efforts behind Snuggledown’s down duvet; the natural materials are ethically sourced and Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified. The brand also manufactures it right here in the UK.

It doesn’t just impress on paper, though. Testers loved its comforting yet lightweight feel, which kept them pleasingly warm at night. It was effortless to unpack, move and fit into a duvet cover too.

The only real downside came post-wash and dry, when some elbow grease was needed to fluff and disperse the down filling evenly again. Otherwise, it remained the same premium duvet our testers had come to love.

Ethical Bedding Bamboo Duvet (Eucalyptus & Bamboo)

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Bamboo Duvet (Eucalyptus & Bamboo)

Score: 91/100

Testers raved about the oh-so-soft feel of this duvet with its cover made from moisture-wicking, breathable eucalyptus fibres. The bamboo filling (which also uses some recycled plastic bottles) has similar breathability characteristics.

Everything about the product was super high-quality – it even came packed in a well-designed bag that’s handy for storage, should you need something that’s weightier in winter (although our testers found it lightweight and cosy).

One thing to note is that the bag doesn’t contain any care instructions, so look online for those – everything on the website is thorough and easy to understand though, so this shouldn’t be an issue.

Cool Summer Nights Double Duvet 4.5 Tog

Score: 91/100

This is another duvet you’ll want to reach for during the heights of summer or if you're an especially sweaty sleeper. It’s 4.5 togs, filled with soft hollowfibre and encased in microfibre, and it ticked our boxes for comfort, breathability and anti-allergy properties, so you can sleep easy all night long.

It was easy to wash and earned a big thumbs up from our testers for drying in less than three hours. Bear in mind that it’s lightweight, so may not be warm enough for winter – it's the perfect heatwave companion, though.

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Temperature Regulating Duvet 10.5 Tog

Score: 91/100

This duvet lived up to its name. Our testers found the 10.5 tog option was indeed brilliant at regulating their body temperature, keeping them cool at night and stopping them from waking up sweaty. And rest assured that it also aced our wash tests – its quality was still high after multiple washes (with no shrinkage) and it dried quickly.

In theory, this duvet should suit all year round, but it may be a little too airy for chillier months. For quality and comfort though, this is a great buy at under £50.

Emma Cloud Duvet 6.7 Tog

Cloud Duvet 6.7 Tog

Score: 90/100

If you think a 4.5 tog duvet may be too lightweight for you, then this Emma one could be a great alternative – at 6.7 togs, it's slightly more substantial. Our panel described it as “indulgent,” generally enjoying the way its soft microfibre filling and casing regulated their body temperature. Plus, small touches like piping around the edges gave it a premium finish.

Instead of shrinking like some of the other duvets we’ve tested, this one stretched in our wash tests. This was only minimal though, so it still fitted nicely into our duvet cover, and the filling remained evenly distributed, helping our testers enjoy their beauty sleep.

How we test duvets

This is an image

Testing duvets at the Good Housekeeping Institute is tiring work. Each one goes through rigorous testing with our experts and we also send them out to panellists to see how they stand up in real world conditions – sweaty sleepers, fidgeting partners and all.

In the lab, every duvet is meticulously inspected to assess quality, with our experts keeping an eye out for any flaws or standout features. They’re then measured and checked to see whether they’re the same size as the brands claim. Then it's time to get washing. We put each duvet through the brand’s recommended wash and dry cycles before inspecting them again for any changes to the size, filling or appearance.

We also ask our panel of sleeping beauties to try each duvet for several weeks before giving us detailed feedback, telling us how well they slept, how breathable it felt, how well it washed and whether they would recommend it to others.

Finally, our experts collate all this information to award each duvet a score.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

This is an image

From pillows and duvets to eye masks and earplugs, we tested nearly 400 products as part of our 2025 Sleep Awards, so we know exactly what to look for when it comes to the best buys for your bedroom.

The rigorous testing protocols we used for this review, which are a combination of in-lab tests and user surveys, were designed by our experienced sleep and wellness tester, Kim Hawley, who is a qualified personal trainer and nutritionist.

All the feedback is then analysed and collated into an easy-to-digest article by our sleep and wellness editor Priyankaa Joshi. Priyankaa has written about hundreds of sleep products, interviewed countless experts and is always on the lookout for the latest launches.

What is the best type of duvet to buy?

The best duvet for you will come down to personal preference, with a filling and tog rating that suits your sleep style, allowing you to move freely, while still feeling secure and cosy in bed. In our list above, we've included some three-in-one duvets that can be used all year round, as well as a range of designs that will see you through heatwaves and benefit hot sleepers, along with some snuggly buys for winter.

If you know what style you want, you can shop our experts' best summer duvets, best winter duvets, or best all-season duvets in our dedicated buying guides.

What is the best duvet filling?

There are a host of duvet fillings available, and each one has different pros (and the occasional con). Generally, though, these can be sorted into two key categories: natural or synthetic.

Natural fibre duvet fillings

Duvets filled with natural fibres tend to be the more traditional choice. They’re typically great insulators, so you’ll be nice and toasty when curled up in your bed – and that's the goal, right?

Besides warmth, natural fibres such as down, wool, and bamboo, are more environmentally friendly as they’re biodegradable.

Down is one of the most popular choices for duvets, and the most luxurious is Hungarian goose down filling. This is because it generally comes in larger clusters than duck down, which means it’s softer, fluffier and better insulated.

As a result, they also tend to be more expensive – some in this list cost almost £400. But all is not lost. If you want to live a life of luxury without that premium price tag, there are plenty of affordable feather and down options on the market – including this Christy Feather and Down Duvet.

And if you’re not sold on feather, wool, bamboo and eucalyptus make good temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking and allergy friendly alternatives that often cost less, too.

Synthetic fibre duvet fillings

So, if natural fibres are so great for filling duvets, why should you shop synthetic duvets? Great question.

Synthetic fibres include materials such as microfibre (often described as “soft as down duvets”), which can be manufactured to different widths to makes duvets feel plump and well-filled. Microfibre duvets are popular for their affordability, sink-in softness and hypoallergenic qualities – all important features if you’re on the hunt for a great night's sleep.

However, as synthetic fibres are made from plastics, they aren’t widely recycled and typically end up in landfill. That said, many brands are using recycled polyester as an alternative, more eco-friendly option.

What is the best tog for a duvet?

Besides filling, one of the biggest decisions to make when shopping for a duvet is the tog rating. This refers to how warm the duvet is and how well it locks in warmth overnight. Essentially, the higher the tog, the cosier you should be in bed.

In summer, look for a lower tog rating (4.5) for a cooler night's sleep, whereas cold, winter nights will likely require a tog around 10.5 to 13.5. However, if you’re a hot sleeper or experience night sweats, you may want a cooler duvet all year round. It all comes down to your personal body temperature.

The duvets in this list range from a refreshing 4.5 togs to a snug 15 togs. If you want the best of both worlds, some duvets come in two parts, consisting of one lighter and one thicker duvet, which can be used separately or together depending on the time of year.
