Gentleman Jack
What to read next
The BBC's rompy 2019 period drama sees Suranne play Anne Lister, the real 19th century landowner who was regarded as the ‘first modern lesbian’. Written and directed by Happy Valley’s Sally Wainwright, who can simply do no wrong, Gentleman Jack follows Anne in her hometown of Halifax, West Yorkshire as she enters into a romance with neighbouring heiress Anne Walker (played by Sophie Rundle). Suranne’s portrayal of Anne - clad in black, masculine dress, which challenged traditional gender expectations of the era - is charismatic, bold and witty. You can watch all of series 1 and 2 now on BBC iPlayer.
Vigil
On its release in 2021, Vigil became one of the BBC’s most-watched new dramas - and for good reason! Suranne plays the intelligent and resilient DCI Amy Silva, who in series 1 is tasked with investigating the suspicious death of a crew member on board the HMS Vigil submarine (in series 2, she’s sent to a Middle Eastern military base). With DCI Amy continually questioning the chain of command while embarking on an emotional personal journey, it’s got plenty of surprises and might even be more twisted than Suranne's megahit drama Doctor Foster! Catch both series 1 and 2 of Vigil on BBC iPlayer now - and there’s a series 3 on the way soon, too!
Scott & Bailey
Not only did Suranne star as DCI Rachel Bailey in this beloved police drama, which first aired in 2011, she co-developed it with Sally Lindsay, too. The series follows two Manchester-based detectives who are opposing personalities - Suranne’s Bailey is hot-headed and impulsive, while Lesley Sharp’s Scott is more mature and stable. It all makes for a gripping and incredibly amusing watch. You can catch series 1 to 5 of Scott & Bailey - all of which star Suranne - now on ITVX.
Hostage
It's the political thriller everyone's talking about, which sees Suranne step into the shoes of British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton. Her character has to make an impossible decision when suddenly, her political and personal worlds collide. To be specific, her husband Dr Alex Anderson (Ashley Thomas) gets kidnapped and his captors demand her resignation. As well as leading the cast, Suranne also acted as executive producer on the Netflix political thriller - and it’s a furiously fun ride. The full series has just landed on Netflix, so it’s ideal for your next weekend binge.
Save Me
Suranne Jones doesn’t just star in big, glossy dramas - she’s happy to step into something grittier, and Sky's 2018 drama, Save Me, is just that. Suranne plays mother Claire McGory, who's searching for her missing daughter with a mixture of raw panic and steely determination. She’s not the lead - that’s Lennie James as Nelly - but even so, she provides the emotional heartbeat of the show. You can catch all of series 1 and 2 now on Apple TV+.
Maryland
In this 2023 ITV series, Suranne opted for a more intimate role - she stars alongside Eve Best in the engrossing family drama. They play two sisters (Suranne as Becca and Eve as Rosaline) who have grown apart over the years, and head to the Isle of Man to confront matters after their mother’s mysterious death. It opens like a thriller, but this twisty drama is really about family dynamics and female identity. You can watch all of Maryland now on ITVX.
Doctor Foster
Suranne made a huge impact in this smash hit BBC drama, which first aired in 2015 and won her a BAFTA. The standout series revolves around Suranne's Dr. Gemma Foster, a GP with a seemingly-perfect life. When she uncovers the secret of her husband’s infidelity, though, her life comes steadily crashing down - and what follows is a compelling blend of obsession and revenge. Series 1 and 2 are available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.
I Am Victoria
The starring roles of Dominic Savage’s acclaimed I Am… anthology series is always reserved for the very best of the best of female acting talent, and that naturally includes Suranne. Her portrayal of Victoria her standalone episode sees her take a turn as a woman who, from the outside has it all - the house, kids and lifestyle. But behind closed doors, Victoria is struggling to keep it together as she heads towards a breakdown, thanks to accumulated self-inflicted, and external, pressures. Watch I Am Victoria (and the rest of the I Am… series) now on Channel 4.
Vanity Fair
ITV's adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s classic novel stars Suranne as the fabulously wealthy Miss Matilda Crawley, the strait-laced and unfashionable aunt to Rawdon Crawley, alongside the likes of Olivia Cooke and Martin Clunes. It’s a series full of scheming and social climbing - and what more could you want from a period drama? Watch it now on Prime Video or Apple TV+.
