What to read next

The BBC's rompy 2019 period drama sees Suranne play Anne Lister, the real 19th century landowner who was regarded as the ‘first modern lesbian’. Written and directed by Happy Valley’s Sally Wainwright, who can simply do no wrong, Gentleman Jack follows Anne in her hometown of Halifax, West Yorkshire as she enters into a romance with neighbouring heiress Anne Walker (played by Sophie Rundle). Suranne’s portrayal of Anne - clad in black, masculine dress, which challenged traditional gender expectations of the era - is charismatic, bold and witty. With DCI Amy continually questioning the chain of command while embarking on an emotional personal journey, it’s got plenty of surprises and might even be more twisted than Suranne's megahit drama Doctor Foster! Catch both series 1 and 2 of Vigil on BBC iPlayer now - and there’s a series 3 on the way soon, too!
