Rain or shine, these trench coats deserve a permanent spot in your wardrobe – here’s why

Style, function, and versatility, these trenches tick every box

By

What do Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss (in practically every Burberry campaign), and the GH fashion team have in common? A shared love of the trench coat, arguably the ultimate throw-on-and-go staple. And, while it may be easy to wear, that doesn’t mean it’s not considered. Come autumn, a trench has the power to instantly elevate any outfit, all while offering that extra layer of protection we rely on during the UK’s famously unpredictable weather shifts.

Despite its utilitarian roots in military wear, the trench coat has secured its place in modern wardrobes as one of the chicest outerwear staples around. Typically defined by its double-breasted front, belted waist and storm flaps (originally designed to let rainwater roll off), the classic trench usually arrives in earthy, camo-adjacent tones, including beige and khaki. M&S, Whistles and & Other Stories all have excellent conventional styles.

While the core silhouette hasn’t strayed far from tradition, there’s no shortage of reinvention. Brands such as Barbour (we featured the Aoife showerproof coat in our edit) continue to deliver on the timeless, practical designs it’s known for, while others are experimenting with pattern, proportion and print. This year, expect everything from heritage checks that nod to the Scottish Highlands (see Next’s classic take), to bold animal motifs such as Free People’s.

Brands have also been getting more creative with materials. GAP’s dark denim trench, complete with button-tab cuffs, offers an edgier twist on the classic silhouette, while River Island leans into faux leather in a bold burgundy shade.

Of course, not all fabrics are built to handle a downpour, so if you’re opting for style over function, don’t forget to pack an umbrella. Prefer to stay dry without sacrificing style? Barbour’s Aoife showerproof trench is a smart, weather-ready pick, and Hobbs’ fully waterproof version is just as reliable.
