Washing your face may be the most basic of skincare steps, but it is also the most important part of your regimen. A good face wash helps remove debris, including makeup, dirt, and pollution, as well as excess oil that can dull skin, clog pores, and cause breakouts. But don't just add any ol' cleanser to your shopping cart.
The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab has a decades-long history of testing face wash formulas for cleansing efficacy and their effects on skin. In our most recent face wash test, we paired facial cleansers with over 470 consumer testers. Each tester used the product in their regular skincare routine and then evaluated it on criteria including ease of application, cleansing ability, irritation, and more. In total, we tallied 6,182 responses to narrow down the best face washes.

Pump can dispense too much product, according to testers
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: A quality cleanser for all skin types, this foam formula excels at removing impurities and is easy to use daily without irritation.
WHAT TO KNOW: Formulated for sensitive skin but suitable for all skin types, SkinCeuticals’ Soothing Cleanser Foam rose to the top for washing away leftover makeup, impurities, and excess oil. Although 96% of our testers rated the cleanser as easy to apply, some testers reported that the cleanser's pump dispensed too much product. In Lab testing, however, our experts found the pump easy to control, so you can dispense smaller amounts.
WHAT TESTERS ARE SAYING: "Instead of feeling tight and dry, this facial wash left my skin feeling much more silky, nourished, and smooth, and rinsed off easily," shared a tester with dry skin. Another satisfied tester described the foam as having "a crisp, refreshing texture."

How we test the best face washes

Scientists in the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab regularly test the best face washes for men and women. We pair facial cleansers with testers across the nation who have different skin types and skin sensitivities. Each tester uses the product for one week and then completes a survey to provide feedback on ease of use, texture, scent, cleansing ability, irritation, and the look and feel of skin after use.
What to consider when shopping for a face wash

We know choosing a cleanser can be overwhelming (even with a vetted list). Here is what GH Beauty experts recommend keeping in mind as you narrow down your selection.
✔️ Formula type: A facial cleanser is available in a variety of formula types, from creams, gels, foams, balms, and oils to bars, powders, and micellar waters. "Generally, cream, oil, and balm cleansers tend to be formulated for normal to dry skin, while gel cleansers are typically better for oily skin," explains GH Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek. Foam cleansers are typically marketed for oily skin types, but new formulas on today's markets are formulated to be more gentle, explains Wnek.
✔️ Skin type: As with every skincare product purchase, taking into account your skin type is key. If you have dry skin, look for claims on packaging that say "hydrating" or "softening." If you have combination or oily skin, look for claims on packaging that "clarifying" or "purifying."
✔️ Fragrance-free: If you have sensitive skin, opting for a fragrance-free formula is a good option. Even if you don't have sensitive skin, some may find a cleanser's fragrance to be too strong.
EXPERT TIP: If you wear makeup, our experts recommend double cleansing with a cleansing balm or micellar water first and then using your regular cleanser. A traditional face wash may not remove all of your makeup, especially if you wear a long-wearing foundation, etc.
