In the Good Housekeeping Institute, an air fryer is nearly always in use. Since the first models came out over a decade ago, we've tested at least 50 models in the Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab and in our homes. Outside of our scientific testing protocols, we use our favorite machines regularly to heat up lunch, and we constantly recieve feedback from real-world GH testers.

Suffice it to say, we have strong opinions about what makes a great air fryer, and plenty of experience with the best (and yes, some disappointing) models. If you're looking for a quick, easy way to make dinner, a small air fryer is an excellent investment. These countertop machines are like small, turbo-charged convection ovens. The best ones heat incredibly quickly, maintain their temperature evenly, and produce wonderfully crisp results that a microwave simply can't come close to.

With each oven that comes into the lab, we test its ability to quickly and evenly crisp up food without drying it out and how easy it is to use and maintain. Our picks for the best small air fryers are perfect if you're short on space, want to give air-frying a shot without a major investment, or are cooking for one to two people.

Best Overall Small Air Fryer

Ninja AF101 Air Fryer

On Sale
AF101 Air Fryer

Pros

  • Includes versatile settings
  • Easy to use and clean

Cons

  • Not as compact as some of the other small air fryers on our list

Good news: Our pick for the best overall air fryer has a smaller four-quart counterpart. It features many of the same settings as the the Ninja Air Fryer Max XL, which has a five and a half-quart capacity, including Air Fry, Roast, Reheat and Dehydrate. It also has all of the same ease of use components: The control panel is easy to read and use, and the buttons are responsive. Plus, the basket slides in and out smoothly and it's nonstick for easier cleanup.

This AF101 model is shorter than the MAX XL and has a more dishwasher-friendly sized basket. It's quick, like the MAX XL, and makes crispy and nicely browned chicken wings and fries.

Best Value Small Air Fryer

Cosori Small Air Fryer

On Sale
Small Air Fryer

Pros

  • Square air fryer basket
  • Easy to use control panel

Cons

  • Nonstick air fryer basket can scratch over time

Cosori makes great air fryers that are easy to use and don't come with a hefty price tag. We recommended one of their six-quart air fryers for years as our best value pick before it got an upgrade.

This model has a two-quart capacity and many of the same great features of Cosori's larger versions, like a nonstick square basket with removable tray that makes it great for two people and a sleek, intuitive control panel. From our experience with this brand, foods cook evenly and the basket cleans up nicely. From an aesthetic point of view, we like how when the air fryer is off, the buttons are hidden for a more streamlined look in your kitchen.

Best Small Air Fryer for One Person

Dash Air Fryer

Air Fryer

Pros

  • Small, compact design
  • Comes in fun colors

Cons

  • A little hard to choose an exact cooking time with the mechanical dials

After years of testing air fryers, this small, two-quart air fryer from Dash still stands out for its cute design and performance. It's a little taller than it looks in pictures, narrow and lightweight with a small, round air fryer basket that can fit about two to three chicken thighs. It comes in fun colors like aqua and a pretty cherry red.

In our tests, it cooked relatively quickly but took a little longer than our top-performing air fryers to make crispy chicken wings. The mechanical controls were easy to use: It uses dials instead of a digital control panel, so all you have to do is keep the temperature at your desired level and turn the timer to turn it on.

One downside is it's a little harder to set a precise temperature and time compared to a digital air fryer. The air fryer tray was also a little hard to clean when food stuck to it, so we recommend using oil as needed.

Best Small Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Cuisinart TOA-26 Compact Airfryer Toaster Oven

On Sale
TOA-26 Compact Airfryer Toaster Oven

Pros

  • Better price point than the brand's air fryer toaster oven
  • Easy to use control panel

Cons

  • Minimal features; does not have a timer or a light

Cuisinart's Air Fryer Toaster Oven is our top-tested air fryer toaster oven. It cooks quickly and is one of the only air fryer toaster ovens we tested that can compete with both a standalone air fryer and toaster oven.

This smaller version is a fraction of its size, but holds more than you think! It's deep versus wide and can air fry up to two and half pounds of food, according to the brand's website. In our tests, we were easily able to fit one pound of wings in it with room to spare as well as a pound of fries in a single layer.

It browned both ingredients well and quickly — on 400ºF, wings turned out golden and juicy in 20 minutes, and fries were deeply browned in 15 minutes. A two-inch piece of salmon came out tender and flaky with crisped skin.

Easiest to Use Small Air Fryer

Instant 4-in-1, 2-QT Mini Air Fryer

4-in-1, 2-QT Mini Air Fryer

Pros

  • Responsive control panel
  • Dial makes it easier to select cooking and temp.

Cons

  • Tray has a hinged handle that can make it a little easier to handle than a fixed handle

Instant is another air fryer brand that stood out in our air fryer tests for being powerful and easy to use. This small two-quart air fryer has a square nonstick air fryer basket with removable tray and a responsive control panel. The buttons have large lettering and the dial allows for the quick selection of time and temp.

It comes in aqua, black and red. In our regular-sized air fryer tests, two different Instant air fryers, plus the air fryer attachment in their Instant Pots, made crispy wings and fries quickly that were nicely browned. We also liked the square basket that offered more cooking area than the round counterparts, which this small air fryer also features.

How we test small air fryers

line break

When we test products in the Kitchen Appliances Lab, we evaluate their performance and ease of use. We believe that all air fryers should cook quickly, including preheat time, and make food crispy without drying it out.

To assess these features, we first narrowed down our testing to include to air fryers smaller than six quarts, which is the average size of air fryers.

From there, we selected a handful that we didn't have too much experience with and performed the same tests we perform on air fryers and appliances with air fryer functions. We tested wings and frozen fries, and we assessed how quickly they cooked and how well they browned each item.

We also assessed the ease of use functions like how easy the control panel was to use, how easy the baskets were to clean and more.

What to look for when shopping for small air fryers

line break

✔️ Size: Average air fryers have a capacity around six quarts. They can cook food for around four people at a time. The small air fryers on our list have a capacity between two quarts and four quarts. They're great for two people or one person. They take up less counter space as well and we find them easier to clean since the baskets are smaller.

✔️ Style: Like average-sized air fryers, small air fryers come in basket-styles or toaster oven-style. Basket styles allow you to air fry smaller ingredients that benefit from shaking, while toaster oven styles often have trays that offer more cooking surface so you can spread more food out in a single area. More cooking surface allows for more even browning and crispier results. The toaster oven trays are also a little easier to flip food on, since they have shorter walls, and they're typically made of stainless steel versus nonstick like the baskets.

Air fryer toaster ovens also offer more versatile since they're equipped to bake, toast and more, like a standard countertop oven.

✔️ Mechanical vs. digital display: Air fryers with dials versus buttons and a digital display cost less than their counterparts. They work perfectly well, but are often less precise. They also typically offer less bells and whistles like pre-programmed settings, halfway timers that remind you to flip your food and more.

✔️ Settings: Oftentimes when an air fryer offers different settings, it's a way to cook food more easily since they're usually programmed at a recommended temperature and time. Most of the times, these settings are also adjustable. They can be helpful if you're not familiar with air frying, but the more you air fry, the more easy it will be to use the manual function. Sometimes, the settings can control the fan speed, aka making it slower so you can bake, but that's not always clear from the marketing.

Another thing to keep in mind with settings is they often go hand in hand with how low of a temperature an air fryer can cook at or how high. For example, if it has a dehydrate setting, it can often cook as low as 100ºF or less, keep warm is around 200ºF, air fry typically maxes out around 400ºF and roast or broil is usually higher.

What can you fit in a small air fryer?

line break

While the advertised capacity remains relatively the same amongst small air fryers, what you can fit in them varies on the shape and size of the basket itself.

Round air fryer baskets offer less cooking area than square air fryer baskets. From our experience with small, two-quart air fryers, you can fit two to three chicken thighs snugly. You can also pile in a pound of fries, though eight ounces yield more consistent results. You can also fit at least a pound of wings, which is about 10 medium-sized wings. Square baskets can fit a little bit more and offer more room to spread ingredients out.

The air fryer toaster oven we recommend can fit up to two and a half pounds of food, according to the brand.

The packaging often offers a good idea of how much food you can fit, but we recommend referring to the user guide for recommended amounts.

Are air fryers healthy?

line break

Air fryers are often considered healthy because they require the use of significantly less oil to cook than many other cooking methods. Oil helps food brown and adds flavor, so we often use a small amount on items that are fresh and not processed. Overall, they can be used to cook healthier recipes, especially if you choose to air fry whole foods, veggies, lean proteins and more.

We love using them to cook root veggies like potatoes and sweet potatoes, cruciferous veggies like broccoli and even Brussels sprouts, chicken, pork chops, salmon and more. They can even be used to make desserts like apple crisp.
